Hickory is the hardest wood we mill, and the most dramatic. This large hickory end grain cutting board — 20 x 14.5 inches, 2.25 inches thick — runs from pale cream sapwood to deep reddish-brown heartwood within the same block, so no two are ever alike. It's the board people stop and ask about. Cut from redeemed hardwood in our family cabinet shop in Grabill, Indiana.

The toughest board we build. Hickory is the wood chosen for axe handles and hammer handles, prized for absorbing impact without splitting. On your counter that means a surface that takes heavy daily chopping for decades and asks for nothing back.

Self-healing end grain. Standing the fibers vertically lets the blade slip between them rather than cut through. Knife marks close back up, the surface stays level, and your edges stay sharp longer than on any edge grain or plastic board.

Routed juice groove. Keeps the juices from a roast, a brisket, or a pile of ripe tomatoes on the board and off your counter.

Rubber feet and finger grips. Removable feet give the block a solid stance and lift it for drying; carved grips make a heavy hickory board easy to carry.

Handcrafted in Indiana. Milled, glued, flattened, and finished with food-safe oil in our own shop from hand-selected American hickory.

Hand wash and oil every few weeks. The most character per dollar of any board we make — and tough enough to hand down.
