Hard maple is the wood every other butcher block gets measured against, and this large maple end grain cutting board — 20 x 14.5 inches, 2.25 inches thick — is the reason why. Its pale, tight-pored surface is the benchmark for knife-friendliness, and it stays quietly in the background so the food takes the attention. Milled from redeemed hardwood in our family cabinet shop in Grabill, Indiana, where offcuts too good for the scrap pile get a second life.
The professional standard. Hard maple is what commercial butcher blocks have been built from for over a century — dense enough to take decades of daily chopping, closed-grained enough to stay smooth and clean, and forgiving enough on a blade that nobody has improved on it since.
Self-healing end grain. The fibers stand vertically, so your knife parts them rather than severing them. Cut marks close back up, the surface stays level, and your edge holds far longer than on edge grain or plastic.
Routed juice groove. A deep channel keeps the juices from a roast, a brisket, or a pile of ripe tomatoes on the board instead of your counter.
Rubber feet and finger grips. Removable feet steady the block and lift it for airflow while it dries. Carved grips make 2.25 inches of solid maple easy to move from kitchen to table.
Handcrafted in Indiana. Milled, glued, flattened, and finished with food-safe oil in our own shop from hand-selected American hard maple.
Hand wash, oil every few weeks, and this board becomes a fixture — the one you buy once and keep using long after everything else in the kitchen has been replaced.
